About University of Calgary Smart Building Materials Lab Scholarships
The Smart Building Materials (SbM) Lab is located in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Calgary and is led by Dr Barney H. H. The lab conducts interdisciplinary research at the intersection of physical science, digital infrastructure, and sustainable construction.

Eligibility Criteria for the University of Calgary Scholarships 2027
To be eligible for the 2027 University of Calgary Scholarships, applicants must meet the following requirements.
- You must have a BSc degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related field for PhD consideration.
- For PhD applicants, you must have obtained an MSc degree in a relevant field (if applicable).
- For MSc applicants, you must have a relevant bachelor’s degree with a strong academic record.
- You must possess a minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0 for PhD and a GPA of 3.5/4.0 for MSc.
- You must showcase proficiency in Python and analytical/computational techniques.
- You must have relevant research or technical experience (if applicable).
- Candidates with these preferred qualifications will be given preference:
- Experience with material characterisation techniques like SEM, micro-CT and FTIR.
- Experience in the fabrication of samples, incorporating concrete or cementitious materials.
- Experience with embedded sensors.
- Experience with large language models or machine learning.
- Experience with life-cycle assessment (LCA).
- Past peer-reviewed publications, mainly for PhD candidates.
